Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP) for Adults and Children in Maryland and Washington, D.C
Recovery from mental health challenges involves more than just medication or therapy sessions; it requires the practical skills to navigate daily life. At Unique Minds Behavioral Health Services, our Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP) bridges the gap between clinical treatment and independent living.
We view PRP as the "how-to" of mental wellness. While your therapist helps you understand your emotions, our PRP counselors help you apply that understanding to the real world - whether that means managing a household, succeeding in school, or building healthy relationships. We provide this community-based support to families across Maryland and Washington, DC.

What Is PRP?
The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP) is a recovery-focused service designed to restore independent living skills and community integration.
Think of it as coaching for life. It is not an inpatient program, nor is it a residential facility. Instead, it is a suite of supportive services that meets you where you are - often literally in your home or community. Our goal is to help individuals who have a mental health diagnosis maintain stability and avoid the need for higher levels of care, such as hospitalization.

PRP is intended for individuals who need ongoing support to manage their condition effectively. Eligibility usually requires a referral from a licensed mental health professional.
-
Adults: We support adults diagnosed with serious mental illness who struggle with daily functioning, housing stability, or employment due to their condition.
-
Children and Adolescents: We work with youth facing emotional or behavioral challenges that impact their performance at school or their dynamic at home.
-
Transitional Needs: Individuals stepping down from inpatient care who need a safety net to ensure they do not relapse.
Who Qualifies for PRP
Skills We Help Build
Our DNP-led team, including Dr. Victorine Ngang and Dr. Ophilia Mbah, oversees a curriculum focused on tangible, measurable growth. We help clients master:
-
Emotional Regulation: Learning real-time techniques to manage anger, anxiety, or depressive episodes outside of a therapy office.
-
Social Skills: improving communication with family, peers, and authority figures.
-
Daily Living: Managing personal hygiene, nutrition, transportation, and household responsibilities.
-
Coping Strategies: Identifying triggers and using healthy mechanisms to de-escalate stress.
-
Vocational & Academic Readiness: Supporting adults in finding and keeping work, and helping children improve attendance and behavior in school.
How PRP Services Are Delivered
We believe in meeting clients in their natural environment to ensure skills stick.
-
One-on-One Sessions: A dedicated PRP counselor works directly with the client on specific goals outlined in their Individual Rehabilitation Plan (IRP).
-
Community and Home-Based: We often conduct sessions in the home or community settings (like libraries or parks) to practice skills in real-world scenarios.
-
Group Support: When clinically appropriate, we offer group sessions to foster peer support and social interaction in a safe environment.
Coordination With Other Care
PRP does not replace your existing treatment; it strengthens it. We work as a collaborative team.
Our PRP counselors coordinate closely with your psychiatrists (for medication management) and therapists to ensure everyone is working toward the same goals. For children, we also collaborate with schools and families to create a consistent support system. If you are already seeing a therapist outside of Unique Minds, we can partner with them to provide the rehabilitative side of your care.
