Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Adults in Maryland and Washington, D.C

Sometimes, a weekly therapy hour isn’t enough to manage a mental health crisis, but a 24/7 hospital stay feels too restrictive. At Unique Minds Behavioral Health Services, we bridge that gap with our Adult Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

We designed this program to offer the highest level of outpatient care available. It provides the intensive structure and medical oversight of a hospital setting, but allows you to return to the comfort of your own home every evening. It is a full-time commitment to your recovery, taking place during the day at our Baltimore and Washington, DC facilities.

What a Typical Partial Hospitalization Program Day Looks Like.webp

Think of PHP as a "day job" where the work is your wellness. A typical day runs Monday through Friday and includes a structured schedule of therapeutic activities.

You are not just sitting in a room; you are actively engaging in recovery. Your week will include:

  • Daily Group Therapy: Processing emotions and building social skills with peers who understand your struggle.

  • Psychiatric Oversight: Frequent access to our DNP-led team, including Dr. Victorine Ngang and Dr. Ophilia Mbah, for medication adjustments and monitoring.

  • Skill Building: Learning practical tools for distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and relapse prevention.

  • Individual Counseling: One-on-one time to dig deeper into personal history and trauma.

Conditions Treated

We provide comprehensive care for severe or acute mental health challenges, including:

  • Severe Depression and Major Depressive Disorder

  • Anxiety and Panic Disorders

  • Bipolar Disorder and Mood Dysregulation

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Co-occurring Disorders: We support adults facing substance use issues alongside their primary mental health diagnosis, ensuring both are treated simultaneously.

Benefits of Partial Hospitalization Program

Why choose Partial Hospitalization over other levels of care?

  • Real-World Application: You learn coping skills during the day and practice them at home in the evening. This helps "cement" recovery in your real life.

  • Daily Monitoring: With daily check-ins, our providers can adjust medications much faster than in a standard outpatient setting.

  • Community Support: Isolation feeds mental illness. PHP immerses you in a supportive community of peers and professionals.

Length of Partial Hospitalization Program

Recovery doesn't have a hard deadline, but PHP is generally a short-term, high-intensity intervention.

Most adults attend the program for 2 to 4 weeks, though this varies based on your personal progress and insurance authorization. We focus heavily on discharge planning from day one. As you stabilize, we coordinate your transition to a lower level of care, such as our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or standard therapy, ensuring you never feel dropped or abandoned after the program ends.

Adult Partial Hospitalization Program Assessment

If you feel like you are losing control or need more support than you are currently getting, do not wait. We serve adults from Frederick County to Salisbury City and everywhere in between.

Who Partial Hospitalization Program Is For

Our PHP is strictly for Adults (ages 18+). We maintain a mature, focused environment separated from our child and adolescent services. This level of care is ideal for:

  • Individuals needing structure: If your symptoms are making it impossible to work or function at home, PHP provides a safe place to be during the day.

  • Step-Down Patients: Adults being discharged from inpatient psychiatric hospitalization who need a transition period before returning to regular life.

  • Hospital Diversion: Individuals whose symptoms are escalating. We intervene now to stabilize you and prevent the need for inpatient admission.
